It speaks volumes that one of the least painful and most important things I have done this week has been getting a mamogram. I don’t often write about the practice of law but I remain in one of those soul crushingly busy times when every moment spent away from my desk is time that I spend stressing about not being at my desk trying to hold back the seemingly endless tide of paper. Only one thing to say about it.

There are times when the skills developed by being a middle child serve me in good stead. For instance, I attended a conference yesterday on a very contentious piece of litigation. I dreaded going. Every encounter on this thing is totally gut wrenching. Then, when I showed up the strangest thing happened—I was getting everything I wanted. Not from my opponent, heavens no, from the court. With the opposition’s rising frustration, I knew, from years of being a middle kid, what to do. What I did was sit there. I said nothing until the end, when I said “Thank you.” And then I left fast before anyone could change their mind. I remember reading an article many years ago about how, as people are having fewer children, the middle child is an endangered species. It’s sad, really as middle children are…well…so great! Yep. That’s us.

The Westminster Dog Show started last night. It is a family tradition to watch but the conflict it creates with new episodes of both Everwood and Gilmore Girls is agony. Much as we did last night, I anticipate that the evening will be spent flipping back and forth between drama and dog-ma.

Well there appears to be a happy ending to the bunny story as we have had more snow and fresh bunny tracks. In fact, even more bunny tracks than before. The only possible explanation I can think of for the odd tableau in the yard was Bunnicula. Ok, still a disturbing thought but not much to be done about it.
